On the Renal Unit at Good Samaritan Hospital, the care team specializes in supporting adult and geriatric patients through some of life’s toughest challenges. Patients arrive with a range of medical conditions such as complications from diabetes, pneumonia, cellulitis, and encephalopathy, while others are recovering from renal and urology surgeries like nephrectomies, prostatectomies, or TURP procedures. The team also manages patients with continuous bladder irrigation (CBI) and provides specialized care for those requiring peritoneal dialysis—handled by trained nurses from the unit, regardless of where the patient is in the hospital.

The Renal Unit houses 22 beds, offering a blend of advanced medical care and a personalized approach. Nurses on this unit work 12-hour shifts, with scheduling designed to fit their lives through self-scheduling. Schedules are built in 6-week increments, incorporating every third weekend and a holiday rotation, with weekend program options available for added flexibility.

New nurses are welcomed with a 6-week competency-based orientation led by experienced preceptors. Training includes specialized education in renal care and peritoneal dialysis, ensuring every nurse feels confident in managing the unique needs of these patients.

Day shifts maintain a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4-5, while nights are staffed at 1:5-6, providing a supportive environment where teamwork thrives. Whether you’re a new graduate or an experienced nurse, the Renal Unit is a place where you can grow your skills and make a lasting impact on patients’ lives.

Job Overview:

This position applies the nursing process in providing direct and indirect holistic care to patients and their families. The position also collaborates, in a collegial manner, with physicians and other health care team members in meeting the patient’s needs. This position may delegate certain aspects of care to those under their direct supervision, within the scope of nursing practice. 
Nurses in this position are:
- newly licensed RNs in specialty areas where the Vizient PNR Program is a requirement and 
- RNs with less than 1 year full time acute care RN experience prior to entering their RN role at TriHealth or 
- RNs with less than 2 years part time acute care RN experience prior to entering their RN role at TriHealth 
- RNs are enrolled in and required to complete the Vizient Professional Nurse Residency program. 
- RNs  will be moved to the  Registered Nurse - Staff position upon completion of all PNR program requirements.

Job Responsibilities:

Performs initial and ongoing assessment of patient and family. Completes initial assessment tool. Documents ongoing assessment per unit/TriHealth guidelines. Communicates assessment findings to other health care providers as appropriate. Includes health counseling and health teaching needs in assessment.

Plans care for patient and family based on assessment, standards of care, and optimal specific outcomes. Initiates and individualizes appropriate patient care guidelines/plan of care or clinical pathways. Updates current plan of care as needed based on patient/family input and healthcare needs. Develops both  short- and long-term goals with patient/family and healthcare team including discharge planning. Communicates plan of care to others.

Provides a safe, therapeutic environment, maintains patient’s autonomy, dignity, and rights, and is sensitive to patient diversity. Seeks resources to help formulate ethical decisions. Balances priorities of the patient's needs and those of the unit/facility. Recognizes emergency situations and takes appropriate action. Completes patient assignment including documentation within scheduled timeframe. Bases interventions on clinical data and desired outcomes and documents accordingly. Trains/educates other staff and acts an expert resource in specialty area through abilities in existing and newer knowledge and skills. Effectively communicates and understands/executes physician orders.

Evaluates the plan of care for patient based on optimal specific patient outcomes. Documents the patient/family response to care including teaching. Collaborates with the patient/family and with other members of the health care team, including physicians, to revise plan of care as needed. Supervises the care that was delegated to other health care team members.
Performs technical skills according to policy and procedure and accepted standards within their area of practice.  Safely administers medications/treatments and monitors their effects.  Uses all equipment in a safe, appropriate manner.

Demonstrates organizations responsibilities: Identifies areas for  self-improvement, functions in relief charge / resource role as requested, completes assignments within scheduled timeframes, cooperates with instructor to facilitate effective learning experiences for students, maintains current knowledge in area of practice, demonstrates knowledge of organizational and department changes.

Responsibilities

The Medical Assistant Certified (CMA) provides superior patient care and perform both clinical and administrative tasks.

  • Enters, maintains, and reports all medical history, medical coding, and files claims using Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Greets, prepares, and takes patients to examination room, this includes:
    • Taking patients’ vital signs, temperature, pulse, blood pressure, height, weight, and medical history.
    • Understanding, properly documenting, and conveying reason for visit or medical complaint.
    • Recording and updating all patient information from pulse oximetry, changes in allergies, and pain levels in EMR.
    • Performing venipuncture and electrocardiograms, as ordered by the physician.
    • Collecting, preserving, and properly labeling laboratory specimens, bodily fluid, and blood samples.

  • Assists the Practice Physician during examinations.

This is a PRN position for a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) on the inpatient behavioral health unit.  This position will be scheduled primarily on the weekends.   The primary job responsibilities are assessments and therapeutic groups. 

Job Overview:
Under the direct clinical supervision of a Licensed, Registered Occupational Therapist - OTR/L- , but must frequently exercise own judgment and knowledge. This position involves direct patient services, such as contributing to the evaluation process and carrying out prescribed treatment, the position will be treating patients on two psychiatric units in either group or individual settings. This position is also involved in supportive activities, such as inventory control, in service education, and general department maintenance. The employee will attend select meetings for the division and/or department. Other position responsibilities include communication and coordination of occupational therapy treatment programs with the patient and team members, and those in this position must be trained to provide occupational therapy assessment and treatment for patients of all ages with additional education and experience focused on psychosocial rehabilitation and care of adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
Job Requirements:
Graduate of an approved technical, professional, or vocational program in
Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) Certified by the National Board for Certification as an Occupational Therapy Assistant preferred, State Licensure
Ability to conduct assessment directed by a Registered, Occupational Therapist and assist in the formulation and implementation of relevant OT interventions
American Occupational Therapy Association and State Occupational Therapy Association

The Medical Assistant Certified (CMA) provides superior patient care and perform both clinical and administrative tasks.

    • Taking patients’ vital signs, temperature, pulse, blood pressure, height, weight, and medical history.

    • Recording and updating all patient information from pulse oximetry, changes in allergies, and pain levels in EMR.
    • Performing venipuncture and electrocardiograms, as ordered by the physician.

  • Assists the Practice Physician during examinations.
