Position Summary

The Dental Assistant assists the dentist with all modalities of dentistry – operatory, oral surgery, endodontics, periodontics, orthodontics, and pediatric dentistry. The assistant practices four‑handed dentistry, maintains infection control and OSHA standards, manages radiographs, prepares and cleans instruments, sterilizes hand pieces, documents patient records, and provides lab support as needed.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide chairside assistance to the dentist, utilizing proper four‑handed dentistry procedures and observing universal precautions, protocols and sterile techniques.
  • Comply with hospital, health center and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain standards of infection control; uphold OSHA guidelines and safety at the assigned station.
  • Take, expose, develop and mount radiographs when applicable.
  • Maintain the dental operatory in an organized and clean state; ensure instruments and supplies are available.
  • Provide comfort to patients while they wait for the dentist.
  • Clean instruments and prepare them for sterilization.
  • Sterilize and/or disinfect instruments and hand pieces following the Dental Department Infection Control Manual.
  • Document patient records as dictated by the dentist; assist in filling charts and processing patient forms.
  • Pour and trim patient study models in the dental laboratory; complete laboratory forms accurately.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on patients’ physical, psychosocial, educational, safety and age‑related criteria.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma.
  • At least 1 year of chairside dental assisting experience.
  • Strong communication skills across all levels of the organization.

Work Schedule

Current shift: M&F 9 am-5 pm. After full operational status this will change to Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 9 am-7 pm and Saturdays 8:30 am-4 pm.

  • Obtains and documents necessary patient information from Patient/family/significant others and health-care providers pertinent to the care of the patient. i.e. safety (Use of Magnetic field), medical history for relevance of exam ordered.
  • Completes assessments by utilizing medical record/radiology requisitions/physicians orders to ensure appropriateness of procedures.
  • Assess patient’s condition/status ensuring ability of patient to proceed with MRI exam.
  • Document all pertinent information involving the use of oral/IV contrast in EPIC, and obtain accurate allergy information.
  • Performs all MRI exams with 100% accuracy. Accurately follows departments’ clinical protocols, including but not limited to Post-Processing.
  • Begin and complete all MRI exams utilizing the RIS tracking system with 100% accuracy 100% of time.
  • Utilizes PACS modality work list with 100% accuracy; patient demographics, accession number.
  • BLS certified
  • Properly QC’s MRI studies utilizing the PACS.
  • Properly evaluates images for diagnostic purposes; recognizing anatomy and pathology for need of an additional scan or contrast.
  • Follows all safety protocols relating to Magnet safety with 100% accuracy 100% of the time.
  • Readily and willingly contributes to the team approach to provide optimal quality patient care/customer satisfaction by working non-assigned shifts as needed and at other sites.
  • Responsible for scanning all required documents into PACS for purpose of paperless workflow.
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment for patients/visitors and colleagues.
  • Incorporates Lahey Clinic Guiding Principles and Mission Statement into daily activities.
  • Complies with all Lahey Clinic Policies.
  • Complies with behavioral expectations of the department and Lahey Clinic.
  • Maintains courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of job description, performance expectations, and competency assessment.
  • Demonstrates a commitment toward meeting and exceeding the needs of our customers and consistently adheres to our Customer service standards.
  • Participates in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities.
  • Participates in and successfully completes Mandatory Education.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduate of AMA approved Radiology Technology or MRI Program

Licensure, Certification, Registration: BLS; and ARRT; Maintains licensure and CEUs on an annual basis. If previously trained must obtain MRI registry within 12 months of employment, if cross training MRI certification exam must be taken within 18 months and completed within 24 months. The following licenses are approved to work as an MRI: AART(MR); ARMRIT; ARRT(CT); ARRT(R)

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Candidate must be proficient in Cross Sectional Anatomy, the use of MRI Scanners/power injectors/venipuncture or in the absence of this skill the ability to be trained to a level of competency.

Candidate must be proficient in Magnet safety.

Experience: 1-2 years experience in a hospital setting preferred. Good working knowledge of PACS or in the absence of this skill the ability to be trained to a level of competency.

Pay Range

$48.00 - $71.33

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
