Primary Responsibilities

Salary Range

The Department of Pediatrics of the Loma Linda University School of Medicine is seeking one Gastroenterologist to join the division of Pediatric Gastroenterology. The Pediatric Gastroenterology division currently has eight Pediatric Gastroenterologists and a Nurse Practitioner.

The division provides comprehensive gastroenterology and nutrition services to patients in Inland Empire of Southern California. Outpatient services are provided through clinics in general gastroenterology as well as specialized team center clinics caring for patients with intestinal failure (home TPN), enteral feeding tube, inflammatory bowel disease, cystic fibrosis, chronic lung disease, spina bifida, home mechanical ventilation, and liver disease. Pediatric GI team center clinics are supported by a nurse specialist, a dietician, a social worker, and other administrative staff.

LLUMC and Children’s Hospital is a tertiary care referral center for the Inland Empire that spans Riverside, San Bernardino, Inyo, and Mono counties of Southern California. There is state of the art endoscopy lab at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital providing all endoscopic procedures, general motility studies, bio-feedback program, IB Stim, breath hydrogen studies, and esophageal pH studies. There is full-time anesthesia service for endoscopy procedures. There is no liver transplant program but pre and post liver transplant is co-managed with regional liver transplant institutions.

As the member of the division, the applicant’s duties will include: providing clinical care to pediatric gastroenterology patients, teaching responsibilities for the Loma Linda University School of Medicine, and pediatric residency program. The Applicant should be an excellent clinician and teacher, as Loma Linda Children’s hospital has a large residency program. There are 84 pediatric residents and 16 Med-Peds residents that come through the gastroenterology program. The applicant with experience/interest in motility disorders is preferred. There are ample opportunities for basic as well as clinical research.

Requirements

  • MD or DO degree (or equivalent).
  • Current active unrestricted medical license.
  • Board Certified or Eligible in Cardiothoracic Surgery and Congenital Heart Surgery (or international equivalent).
  • Appropriate medical credentialing through the Medical Staff Services office.
  • Completion of all required CCHMC pre‑employment activities (screening, background check, badging, and orientation).
  • Disclose any official disciplinary actions by a hospital, specialty board, medical association, or government agency.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Teaching and training competence with medical students, residents, and fellows in pediatrics.
  • Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience mentoring women or members of underrepresented groups and working with diverse patient populations.

Under general supervision of the Chief Medical Officer, the Physician provides comprehensive cardiology care to patients of the Winslow Indian Health Care Center Inc. (WIHCC), including those at Dilkon Medical Center (DMC). The Physician upholds WIHCC’s Vision, Mission, and Value Statements and maintains confidentiality of all privileged information at all times.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Full‑time outpatient cardiology clinic, Monday through Friday 08:00 to 16:30.
  • Provides care in general cardiology clinic, new patient consults, continuity of care patients, and pacemaker clinic.
  • Serves as consultant to WIHCC, DMC, Leupp satellite clinic patients and providers from urgent care, emergency department, walk‑in clinic, dental, and general clinics on intermediate and daily basis requiring complex cardiac diagnostic or management services.
  • Hospital call: None, but may be contacted by urgent care or emergency department with after‑hours telephone calls to discuss complex patients and make recommendations (1–2 times per month).
  • Interviews and examines patients with complex cardiac conditions, reviews past medical history, and requests or performs diagnostic tests necessary to obtain all possible information for each case.
  • Diagnoses and treats adult patients with a wide range of cardiovascular problems, including ischemic heart disease, congestive heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, diabetes and hypertension with cardiovascular effects, and other complex and critical conditions.
  • Provides chronic disease management and acute emergency care in various settings, including WIHCC Urgent Care and DMC Emergency Department.
  • Provides advanced specialty diagnostic procedures, including supervisor and interpreter of treadmill stress testing, echocardiography, dobutamine stress testing, arrhythmia monitoring and testing, pacemaker interrogations, and supervision of PET stress test offered through outside vendor.
  • Collaborates with invasive cardiologists, electrophysiologists, surgeons and other sub‑specialists in cardiovascular medicine for additional diagnostic or therapeutic intervention when needed, coordinating referrals and ensuring timely follow‑up care.
  • Refers patients for admission to acute medical inpatient specialty settings when care cannot be adequately provided.
  • May conduct intermittent administrative tasks such as clinic scheduling and addressing equipment concerns at either facility.
  • Documents medical care in WIHCC electronic health record in accordance with WIHCC policies, regulatory requirements, and accrediting body standards.
  • Develops productive and cooperative working relationships with health care providers within WIHCC, outside hospitals, nursing homes, and private practitioners throughout the community.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
  • Completion of an accredited fellowship training program in Cardiology.
  • Board certified or eligible by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Cardiology (required).
  • License to practice medicine in any of the 50 states; Arizona preferred.
  • Bilingual skills in English and Navajo language preferred.
  • Valid unrestricted and insurable driver’s license.
  • Must successfully pass a background investigation and meet requirements for a Child Care position under the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act (ICPFVP Act).
