Summary:
The Registered Nurse Lactation Counselor provides expert lactation support and education to breastfeeding mothers and infants, utilizing the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized care. This role involves providing in-person consultations, telephone follow-ups, and outpatient services to address lactation challenges, enhance breastfeeding success, and ensure mothers and infants receive optimal care. The Lactation Counselor works closely with lactation consultants, physicians, nursing staff, and other healthcare providers to coordinate care, provide education, and ensure continuity of lactation support after discharge. The role also includes patient education, staff training, and promotion of lactation resources.
Responsibilities:

Patient Education and Counseling:

  • Document all interactions, assessments, and care provided in accordance with hospital policies and patient privacy regulations.
  • Offer timely and responsive assistance to mothers requiring follow-up care, ensuring they feel supported in their breastfeeding journey.
Collaboration and Coordination of Care:
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers to ensure seamless continuity of care for breastfeeding families.
  • Communicate and coordinate effectively with hospital staff to ensure lactation needs are addressed during hospital stays and post-discharge.
  • Follow up with patients to monitor progress, address any concerns, and adjust care plans as needed.
Outpatient Lactation Support:
  • Provide individualized lactation support to mothers and infants through outpatient follow-up, including in-person visits and telephone consultations.
  • Assess breastfeeding techniques, infant latch, milk supply, and overall breastfeeding goals.
  • Address common lactation challenges, including sore nipples, low milk supply, latch issues, and breastfeeding pain, using evidence-based strategies.
  • Provide guidance and support for mothers and infants experiencing more complex issues.
Training and Education for Staff:
  • Assist in the training and education of hospital staff, including nurses and other healthcare providers, to ensure accurate and consistent lactation information is provided to patients.
  • Promote best practices in lactation care across the hospital through in-service training and educational resources.
Program Development and Improvement:
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of lactation services, ensuring they align with current evidence-based guidelines.

A9 is a 27-bed unit with an emphasis on the neurological, thoracic, abdominal, and orthopedic trauma patient. The unit is the designated stroke overflow unit for CHRISTUS Spohn. As a nurse on this fast-paced unit, you can expect to work with a diverse, highly collaborative team of physicians, advanced practitioners, RNs, LVNs, Therapists, RRTs, and ancillary staff. We are a unit that values teamwork above all.

Job Summary and Qualifications

Shift: 7pm-7am

Supports department by facilitating the delivery of professional, specialized nursing care related to IV therapy and enteral nutrition for the comfort and well being of patients; utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation to provide care, education and teaching related to vascular access needs; and enteral nutrition and by implementing medically prescribed interventions related to IV therapy and enteral nutrition in defined populations including Mission, Mission member hospitals, and other organizations where Mission's services and care are provided. Performs placement of enteral feeding tube for patients utilizing an electronic feeding tube placement system. Prepares patient for enteral feeding tube placement procedure according to manufacturer's guidelines, evidence based and Mission policies.

What qualifications you will need:
  • Required Experience:
    • Experience as Vascular Access specialist to perform difficult peripheral access on patients with limited vein access.
    • Experience in central venous catheter care and maintenance such as dressing and needleless connector changes.
    • Experience in trouble shooting central venous catheter occlusions and administering FDA approved fibrinolytic drug to restore central venous catheter to full function.
    • PICC insertion experience using real time ultrasound and PICC tip location system.
    • Ability to be cross trained to insert midline catheters in both Adults and Pediatric population.
    • Ability to be cross trained to insert PICCs in Pediatric population.
    • Ability to be cross trained to provide vascular access services to the surrounding Community, affiliate hospitals or other facilities as needed. Ability to be cross trained to insert feeding tubes using feeding tube tip confirmation system.
    • Ability to be cross trained to trouble-shoot enteral feeding tube issues.
  • Preferred Experience: Experience in data collection and measuring outcomes for all vascular access procedures and enteral feeding tube procedures.
  • Required Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Effective 3/1/18 Bachelor of Science in Nursing OR enroll in a BSN or advanced degree program within 6 months AND obtain a BSN within 4 years of hire date into RN position. Previous signed BSN commitment letter OR grandfathering will be accepted between departments and Mission Health entities. Exemptions may be approved with CNO System Council approval.
  • Preferred Education: Masters in Nursing or Cortrak training course for inserting enteral feeding tubes.

Are you passionate about empowering others to live independently and direct their own care? Join Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan as an IRIS Consultant and help individuals shape meaningful lives through the IRIS Program (Include, Respect, I Self-Direct ).

As part of our ICA Team, you'll work in a social services capacity to support participants in maintaining autonomy, ensuring health and safety, and navigating long-term care services. This role will be based out of the Eau Claire area, and will also travel into surrounding areas.

What You'll Do

  • Build trusting relationships with participants
  • Assist in developing IRIS Support and Services Plans
  • Maintain monthly contact and quarterly visits
  • Help participants understand and maintain IRIS eligibility
  • Connect with local agencies and ADRCs to expand service options
  • Document all contacts and visits in required systems within 2 business days
  • May conduct annual Long-Term Care Functional Screens
  • Work independently while collaborating with a supportive ICA team

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in social work, psychology, human services, counseling, nursing, special education or a related field and have a minimum of one year of supervised experience working with seniors and/or people living with disabilities; OR 4+ years of direct experience in social services with seniors or individuals with disabilities OR Current IRIS Consultant in good standing with DHS exemption
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Hmong, Arabic, Russian, or other languages is a plus!
  • Strong commitment to participant autonomy and meaningful living
  • Comfortable with smartphones, tablets, and computer systems
  • Knowledge of human behavior, social interaction, and community resources
  • Willingness to serve diverse populations with respect and empathy

Conditional Release Program Support individuals found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. You'll provide professional testimony, prepare court documents, and apply your understanding of Wis. Stat. 971.17 while partnering with institutions, courts, and community providers.

Opening Avenues for Re-entry Success (OARS) is a voluntary program working with correctional clients in the pre-release state and continues post release. Clients can remain in the program for up to 2 years.
