Senior Software Engineer, Fullstack
Airbase
New York, NY

Job Overview

Airbase builds the software platform for radio frequency spectrum licensing, coordination, and intelligence. Backed by a16z, we are a fast-moving, dual-use startup transforming wireless communication from a static, analog bottleneck into a dynamic, software-defined advantage.

Today, the world's most advanced hardware—from satellite mega-constellations to Army UAS swarms and Electronic Warfare systems—is grounded by 20th-century paperwork. Spectrum coordination relies on fragmented databases, missing systems of record, and decades of static PDFs. Airbase is fixing this. We've built novel AI pipelines to digitize this analog bureaucracy and translate it into a software-defined, machine-readable data layer. We are transforming the spectrum from a static bottleneck into a dynamic advantage, delivering machine-speed tactical deconfliction for the military and automated licensing for commercial innovators.

What You'll Do

  • Architect and Build: Design, develop, and deploy end-to-end features using modern JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks (e.g., React, Next.js, Node.js).
  • Visualize the Invisible: Build highly interactive, dynamic UIs that map and visualize complex RF spectrum data, allowing users to understand congested signal activity at a glance.
  • Develop Robust APIs: Build the API-first data layer that allows our platform to integrate seamlessly with both modern autonomous systems and legacy government databases.
  • Bridge the Data Gap: Work closely with our data and AI pipelines to ingest digitized legacy records (PDFs, old databases) and surface them cleanly in the application.
  • Own the Infrastructure: Help shape our engineering culture, best practices, deployment pipelines, and overall system architecture as we scale from prototype to enterprise production.

What We're Looking For

  • JavaScript Mastery: 4+ years of professional fullstack experience with deep expertise in JavaScript and TypeScript.
  • Modern Stack Experience: Strong proficiency with modern frontend frameworks (React, Vue, or similar) and backend development using Python (FastAPI) or Rust.
  • Database Fluency: Experience designing and querying relational databases (PostgreSQL) and handling complex, unstructured data.
  • Complex UI/UX: A track record of building user interfaces that distill massive amounts of complex, technical data into simple, intuitive workflows.
  • Startup DNA: High-agency builders. You thrive in ambiguity, write clean but practical code, and care more about shipping real-world impact than over-engineering.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with geospatial data, mapping libraries (Mapbox, Cesium), or real-time data visualization.
  • Previous experience in defense tech, government software, or highly regulated industries.
  • An active U.S. Security Clearance (or eligibility to obtain one).

Benefits & Perks

  • Competitive salary with opportunities for growth and equity in an early stage startup.
  • Comprehensive health insurance plans.
  • Regular team-building events and company retreats.

Airbase is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status.

  • Terminate diverse connector types common in UAV ecosystems, including JST, Molex, XT series, and defense-standard circular connectors.
  • Route, secure, and shield power and signal wires inside compact airframes to minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI) and structural wear.

3. System Assembly & Integration

  • Integrate internal electronic modules, including flight controllers, GPS units, telemetry radios, optical sensors, payloads, and high-output propulsion systems into the drone chassis.
  • Work directly from schematics, wiring diagrams, blueprints, and engineering Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Manage and safely handle high-capacity lithium-polymer (LiPo) and lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery distribution lines and high-current power rails.

4. Diagnostics, Testing & Quality Control

  • Conduct functional systems-level verification, including power-on checks, isolation/insulation testing, and continuity checks.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical, electromechanical, and signal faults down to the component level using multimeters, oscilloscopes, and regulated power supplies.
  • Calibrate onboard sensors (IMUs, compasses, barometers) and verify motor-to-ESC communication protocols.
  • Thoroughly document build logs, non-conformances, and engineering deviations.

Qualifications & Skills

Required Experience

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in electromechanical assembly, ideally within the UAV, robotics, aerospace, or defense electronics sectors.
  • Proven proficiency in precision micro-soldering (SMD components down to 0402 or smaller).
  • Demonstrated expertise in custom wire harness fabrication and terminal crimping.

Technical Skills

  • Deep understanding of basic electrical principles (Ohm’s law, voltage drops, AC/DC power routing, and signal integrity).
  • Ability to interpret complex electrical schematics and mechanical drawings cleanly.
  • Familiarity with UAV-specific components (flight logs, firmware, telemetry modules, and PWM/DShot protocols).

Preferred Certifications & Education

  • IPC-A-610 (Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies) or IPC/WHMA-A-620 (Requirements and Acceptance for Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies) certifications.
  • J-STD-001 certification (Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies).
  • Associate degree or technical certification in Electronics Technology, Electrical Engineering, Avionics, or Robotics.

Physical Requirements

  • High manual dexterity and visual acuity required for fine-motor component placement, pinning, and detailed microscopic inspection.
  • Ability to stand or sit at an assembly bench for extended periods.
